The PKM is a belt-fed, gas-operated machine gun that was developed in the Soviet Union in the early 1960s to replace for the aging Degtyaryov machine gun. It has since become one of the most widely used machine guns in the world, with an estimated 1 million or more units produced. It is widely used by numerous armed forces and paramilitary organizations around the world. It has seen extensive use in conflicts around the world, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. The PKM is highly reliable, durable, and easy to maintain, making it a popular choice for both infantry and vehicle-mounted applications. It is typically used for suppressive fire against enemy positions or as a defensive weapon, such as when mounted on a vehicle or in a fixed position.
